Alzheimers Centre
Following an invitation from Kent Social Services to create artwork for the new short-stay respite centre at Broadmeadow in Folkestone, Strange Cargo installed a series of framed photographic prints from their public art project, Other People's Photographs. These images, featuring familiar Folkestone locations, were generously loaned from the personal photo albums of local residents.
Commissioner Jane Barnes reported that the installation has had a profoundly positive impact on the residents. It provides focus and stimulation for individuals who may be distressed upon arriving at the centre, offering a sense of familiarity and contributing to a calming environment.
Strange Cargo has since been approached by a Reminiscence Specialist, whose research focuses on working with people with dementia, to discuss the artwork's effects and its role in their work.
