Photograph installation at Broadmeadow Alzheimer's centre 2011
Following an invitation by Kent Social Services to produce artwork for the interior of the new short stay respite centre at Broadmeadow in Folkestone, for people with Alzheimer's, Strange Cargo installed a series of framed, photographic prints from their public art project Other People's Photographs. The images which show people in familiar Folkestone locations have been loaned from the personal photo albums of local people.
Feedback from commissioner Jane Barnes, is that the impact of the installation has been truly dramatic on residents, enabling very distressed people coming to the centre for the first time to find a focus and stimulation in the artwork, that lends familiarity to their surroundings and has had a positive and calming effect.
Strange Cargo has subsequently been approached by a Reminiscence Specialist whose research is based around working with people with dementia, to discuss the impact of the artwork.
