Meet Belle: The Canterbury Youth Giant

Belle, the Canterbury Youth Giant, was created as part of the Portrait of a Nation's "Exploring Roots" initiative, culminating in the Liverpool City of Culture finale.

Strange Cargo brought Belle to life with the help of young people from across the Canterbury area. Through consultations, local youth expressed their love for Canterbury, highlighting its popularity, diversity, and reputation as a fashionable, cool, and safe place to live and visit. They emphasized the importance of the iconic Cathedral and envisioned Belle as a representation of multiple faiths, embodying a young, forward-thinking, and female spirit.

In our temporary workshop, school groups and local graffiti artists contributed to Belle's creation, designing her clothing, assisting with hours of papier-mâché, and witnessing her transformation.

When Belle was finally awakened, she was accompanied by her lively, dreadlocked gargoyles and the vibrant Jugnu Bhangra dancers, making her debut a truly unforgettable celebration of youth and culture.
