Charivari Day 2008: Movements in Art
In 2008, Folkestone became a vibrant hub of contemporary art, marking the launch of the first Folkestone Triennial. Inspired by this pivotal moment in the town’s resurgence, Strange Cargo themed that year’s carnival "Movements in Art."
Participants crafted exuberant costumes, drawing inspiration from the works of artistic giants across centuries. With a creative blend of artistic excellence, the carnival celebrated diverse genres such as Young British Artists, Pop Art, Cubism, Modernism, Surrealism, and innovative hybrids. This dynamic fusion of art and carnival tradition brought unparalleled energy to the streets, turning the public realm into a lively, people-centered spectacle.
