Cheriton Light Festival 2013
On the weekend of February 23-24, Cheriton came alive with its first-ever Cheriton Light Festival, transforming the streets of this Kent Garrison town into a vibrant celebration of light and art. The festival, aimed at brightening the post-Christmas winter months, showcased a dazzling array of artworks, from giant mechanical fireflies by Andrew Baldwin to stunning light projections by Ross Ashton and Greg Stobbs. Local schoolchildren also contributed handmade lanterns, adding a personal touch to the festival’s colorful display. The event culminated in a spectacular Phoenix-shaped bonfire and fireworks display, making for an unforgettable experience.
Saturday’s theme, "Electricity," featured international artists who illuminated Cheriton with a mix of projections, sound installations, and interactive art. Highlights included Ross Ashton’s gothic projections on All Souls Church and Greg Stobbs’s whimsical film work projected on Ilex Road. On Sunday, "Fire" took center stage with a grand lantern parade led by Batala Portsmouth and Bloco Fogo, followed by a breathtaking pyrotechnic display and a phoenix bonfire. Special thanks to all involved and to our sponsors: Arts Council England, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, and others.
