Cheriton Transcription
In 2012, Strange Cargo embarked on a three-year mission to enhance public art experiences in Cheriton. Building on the success of the Winter Grotto, which engaged around 2,000 local residents, a new participatory arts project is set to make a significant impact in the area.
Local groups, including the Talk Time group from Cheriton Library, Nepali residents, and students from Pent Valley, Harvey Grammar, and Folkestone School for Girls, collaborated with Strange Cargo to create a series of large, vibrant images. These artworks were displayed on the gable ends of buildings along Cheriton High Street throughout August and September.
Inspired by the works of renowned British artist William Hogarth, known for his social commentary, the images updated his themes to reflect aspects of 21st-century life and the creativity of the local participants. Many of the artworks featured familiar local landmarks and buildings.
Cheriton businesses generously supported the project by providing the gable ends of their buildings as canvases for these public art pieces.
