Din Shuru

Din Shuru enabled Strange Cargo to collaborate with storyteller Vayu Naidu and carnival artists Kinetika to create a spectacular illuminated parade that opened the 2003 Canterbury Festival.

This project involved numerous artists and organisations from across the UK, with elements from each event travelling to the next, creating a dynamic and evolving spectacle. The project culminated in its final performance in Kolkata, India. Strange Cargo artists had the opportunity to meet with Indian and Trinidadian artists, who introduced them to new techniques and materials. These skills were then passed on to the school and community groups involved in the project.

Din Shuru explored the cultural influences of Indian migration to Trinidad in the 1850s and its impact on the development of Carnival in the 1880s. The epic tale of this journey was vividly portrayed through the streets of Canterbury, concluding with a grand finale at Dane John Gardens.
