Din Shuru
Din Shuru enabed Strange Cargo to collaborate with story teller, Vayu Naidu and carnival artists Kinetika to create a fabulous lit night time parade to open the 2003 Canterbury Festival.
Din Shuru involved a number of artists and organisations from across the UK, as each event took place, elements from the last event travelled to take part in the next, creating an ever growing project that grew and evolved, culminating in its final performance in Kolkatta in India. Strange Cargo artists were able to meet Indian and Trinidadian artists, who demonstrated new techniques and materials. These skills were passed on to the school and community groups who took part in the project.
Din Shuru explored the cultural influences that Indian migration to Trinidad in the 1850's brought to the origins and development of Carnival in the 1880's. The epic tale of the journey was played out through the streets of the City of Canterbury to the finale site in Dane John Gardens.
