Forget me Not School Workshops

With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Strange Cargo developed the "Forget Me Not" workshop project, designed to educate participants about life in Cheriton during the First World War and to honor the sacrifices of local servicemen, women, and their families. The project included primary school workshops and a public family workshop at Strange Cargo, both of which were highly successful and well-received.

Workshops were centered around the 1914 Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin, teaching students about its history and significance. Activities included creating a replica tin, handling authentic WWI objects, and learning about trench art. Students filled their tins with items that connected them to Cheriton's history during the war, such as a registration card, a postcard, a lucky penny, and a remembrance poppy.

Other activities included exploring military insignia, mapping local WWI fallen servicemen’s homes, and discussing significant local sites from the war era. Each student left with a deeper understanding of Cheriton's wartime history and a personal connection to the stories of those who lived through it.
