Millennium Clocks
On 1st January 2000 representatives from every village across the district, converged on the town of Dover to celebrate the coming of the new era.
Following the lanterns of New Years Eve, the streets of Dover exploded with a spectacular carnival of light and colour, mardi-gras style, with the illuminated Carnival of the Planets. Dover was the sun, with the surrounding villages becoming the other planets congregating en masse to represent the entirety of the solar system.
The procession led the crowds to Dover Harbour where from the ashes of a large mechanical structure had arisen. As the planets arrived the orrery lit up and as they all moved into place it exploded into a mass of sound and light as pyrotechnics shot skywards, bringing huge applause and cheering from the crowds.
The event attracted over 17,000 local people over the two nights of the event and demonstrated the value to local people of focused celebrations, with older and more vulnerable spectators enjoying coming together to enjoy sharing the momentous nature of the occasion alongside other residents within the fold of a safe, night time environment.
