My Heart Belongs to Hastings
When you next visit Hastings, remember to bring a padlock with you. The project "My Heart Belongs to Hastings," launched during the Coastal Currents Arts Festival in 2012, was unveiled on 23rd September at Goats Ridge, across from the statue of Queen Victoria at St. Leonard’s.
This interactive sculpture invites everyone who strolls along Hastings seafront to contribute by attaching a padlock engraved with a message or initials, symbolising a personal connection or a memorable visit. Each padlock represents a unique member of the community.
The sculpture is crafted from reclaimed greenheart timbers, salvaged from Pevensey Bay’s coastal defences. These wooden posts, weathered by years of saltwater and spray, form the base of the piece. Stainless steel mooring shackles are mounted on the timbers to hold the padlocks, which dangle in organic shapes reminiscent of rope-grown mussels or lush seaweed.
Leading up to the unveiling, Strange Cargo conducted a series of artist-led workshops throughout Hastings, where participants created hundreds of beautifully decorated padlocks. Over time, the installation has expanded as new visitors continue to add their locks, enhancing its shape and significance.
This artwork was commissioned by Coastal Currents, with support from Arts Council England, Hastings Borough Council, and The Environment Agency.
