Skelly Night

Skelly Night 2001 embraced the vibrant imagery and traditions of the Mexican Day of the Dead Festival, a theme perfectly suited to Ramsgate’s rich history as a Roman burial ground. Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a festival that momentarily bridges the gap between the living and the dead, celebrating the memories of deceased loved ones during the festival of All Souls.

The harbour procession featured giant, colourful skeleton puppets—larger and more elaborate than those of the previous year—accompanied by costumed figures. Local houses and pubs along the route were adorned to join in the festivities, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

The event’s grand finale was inspired by the imagery of a Día de los Muertos candelabra, culminating in an animated musical performance that captivated a significantly larger audience and set a high standard for the subsequent years. As part of Thanet Council's arts development programme, Strange Cargo collaborated with Isle of Thanet Arts, Artwise, and Carnival Sounds to create this unforgettable celebration.
