Skelly Night

Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead Festival and reflecting Ramsgate’s history as a Roman burial ground, Strange Cargo collaborated with Isle of Thanet Arts as part of Thanet Council’s arts development programme to create a spectacular family event in November 2000.

The event, named Skellynight, embraced the vibrant imagery and traditions of Día de los Muertos, a major Mexican celebration that momentarily bridges the gap between the living and the dead to honour deceased relatives during the festival of All Souls.

Hundreds of colourful, costumed characters paraded from the harbour to the beach, culminating in a giant graveyard brought to life with a stunning pyrotechnic finale. The event quickly gained popularity, engaging local schools and the community, and establishing a large, enthusiastic audience.
