The Fish Symphony

The Fish Symphony, a highlight of the 2005 Herne Bay Festival, presented an adventurous narrative of intrigue, mutiny, and local folklore. The performance featured the towering figure of Salt Peter, who paraded through the town’s streets, accompanied by dancing giant fish and lively seaside shanties. Salt Peter enthralled the audience with whimsical tales of old Herne Bay.

The six giant fish featured in the performance were crafted during a residency at Herne Bay High School, part of the Make It Real initiative. Students animated these creations, bringing them to life for the promenade performance. Chris Tophill wrote cautionary tales for children, drawing on local myths, while Jack Pound and the Rattlers composed and performed the accompanying songs.

The event fostered local participation and community involvement, making a significant impact on the 2005 Festival programme. It also marked the debut of the Herne Bay Fish, which now accompany Lily the Giant on her various outings.
