The View From Here
Many philosophers and anthropologists have explored the significance of the everyday, drawing our attention to aspects of life so commonplace that they are often overlooked. Yet, when these ordinary elements are presented in a new light, they can reveal themselves as remarkable, wonderful, and extraordinary.
This charming little book emerged from an artist residency as part of the Time Will Tell arts programme at Croft Castle in Hereford. Commissioned by Meadow Arts and the National Trust, the project combines a book with a walking trail, reflecting a collaborative effort with local people who work and volunteer at the Castle, as well as residents of the surrounding villages.
Together with Strange Cargo, the community has contributed to creating a colloquial history of Croft Castle. Through personal anecdotes, histories, rumours, and time-honoured stories passed down through generations, locals have generously shared their reflections on this ancient landmark, making their personal insights accessible to all.
The artwork was displayed both as an installation in the Stables and as a trail throughout Croft Castle and its grounds, integrating these stories into their original context. The result is a deeply personal, beautifully crafted history that continues to evolve and resonate.
